bullet  General Notes

Charles Everett Moser was born 23 December 1826 in Liberty Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, the son of Daniel MOSER and Susannah EVERETT. He was a carpenter by trade.

On 15 November 1848 in Trumbull County, Ohio, he married his wife, Margaret VAN WORMER, daughter of M. Van Wormer.  (There are two conflicting marriage records for this marriage. The license was obtained on 12 November 1848; however, the marriage return lists the marriage as occurring on 15 November 1850 —   since the return was filed in June 1850, clearly the year listed is in error. Since Charles and Margaret were married in the 21 Aug 1850 census enumeration in Vienna, Trumbull County, Ohio, I am assuming that 15 November 1848 is the correct marriage date.) One daughter was born to them in 1860. The marriage ended in divorce in 1894.

On 9 August 1862 at the age of 36, Charles enlisted as a Private in Company C, 105th Volunteer Infantry Regiment of Ohio. This regiment was organized at Camp Cleveland, Aug. 20 and 21 1862, to serve for three years. Within one hour after muster-in the regiment, 1,013 strong, was on the march to the station, under orders to leave the state. Its first field of operations was in Kentucky and after various marches in which it suffered much, it left Louisville in October, marched via Taylorsville and Bloomfield, to Perryville, where it was engaged in the battle of that name. Charles was unable to serve his full term; he received a disability discharge from Company C, 105th Infantry Regiment Ohio on 19 Nov 1863 at Columbus, Ohio.

By the 1870 census enumeration he is Sigourney, Keokuk County, Iowa, USA with his small family. No trace of them can be found in the 1880 census, but Charles shows up in voter registers for Alameda County, California in 1890 and 1892, as well as in the 1900 census in Oakland, Alameda County, California.

On 19 December 1901, Charles married Blanche (Grant) Newman in San Francisco, California. She was a divorcée less than half his age. Four months later in April 1902, Blanche found out that the divorce between Charles and his first wife, Margaret, had never actually been finalized.

Charles died of dysentery in Oakland, California on 04 July 1902, after a 5-day stay in the Alameda County Hospital. He was buried in the GAR section of Mountain View Cemetery on 06 July 1902. His second wife Blanche (Grant) Newman Moser died of lobar pneumonia at the young age of 40 years on 24 November 1912. She was buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.

Regimental History
OHIO
ONE HUNDRED and FIFTH INFANTRY
(Three Years)

One Hundred and Fifth Infantry. - Col., Albert S. Hall;
Lieut.-Cols., William R. Tolles, George T. Perkins; Maj. Char-
les G. Edwards. This regiment was organized at Camp Cleveland,
Aug. 20 and 21 1862, to serve for three years. Within one
hour after muster-in the regiment, 1,013 strong, was on the
march to the station, under orders to leave the state. Its
first field of operations was in Kentucky and after various
marches in which it suffered much, it left Louisville in Octo-
ber, marched via Taylorsville and Bloomfield, to Perryville,
where it was engaged in the battle of that name. The regiment
went into this battle 800 strong and of these 48 were killed
and 217 wounded, many of whom died of their wounds. Passing
next into Tennessee the regiment remained at Murfreesboro until
the following June, when it broke camp to participate in the
Tullahoma campaign. It was engaged at Chickamauga and was
highly complimented by the brigade commander. The casualties
of the regiment in this battle were 80 killed, wounded and
prisoners, and as two of the largest companies were not in the
engagement the casualties were proportionately very heavy. The
regiment took part in the maneuvers at Chattanooga and partici-
pated in the battle of Missionary ridge, its loss being com-
paratively slight. In the long and fatiguing Atlanta campaign
of many skirmishes and battles, the regiment made a good rec-
ord, and although not immediately engaged in any of the heavy
engagements, its casualties were large. After the fall of At-
lanta it marched to the sea and up through the Carolinas,
thence to Washington, and then home, being mustered out on June
3, 1865. Of the 1,013 men who left Cleveland in 1862 only 427
were present at the final roll-call.
